In The City of Brotherly Love, the cheese steak is both a beloved icon and cultural obsession. Born by accident in 1930, when two Philadelphian brothers who sold hot dogs were improvising with their leftovers, the genuine Philly cheese steak combines frizzled beef, onions and cheese tucked inside a perfectly crusty Philadelphia roll. In 1953, Kraft created Cheese Whiz, which became the choice topping of true steak connoisseurs and revolutionized the cheese steak sandwich.
So you may be wondering, can you find a decent cheese steak outside of Philly? Ask a Philadelphian and they'll tell you that you can't get an authentic cheese steak an hour outside the city. Long ago, this may well have been the case. But nowadays, sandwich shops all over the country are able to ship in fresh Philly rolls, which are key to producing a crave-worthy cheese steak.

Noble in West Phila. We sliced our own beef and used Amorosa Rolls
only. The other good steak shop in town was "Pats" down in South Philly.
Prior to cheese whiz - provlone or American were the top choices.
